Great spaces don’t just happen; they are meticulously crafted narratives. Every sightline, architectural facade, and pathway is an intentional choice designed to guide guests through a physical story—much like a hero navigating a well-crafted journey. But how do we apply this level of deliberate, sensory engineering to our own projects, schools, organizations, and communities?
Following our past explorations of Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the Ensō Education Institute is thrilled to announce our return to the Walt Disney World Resort!
Join us from May 22nd – 24th for a unique, three-day immersive masterclass: Imagineering the Built Environment. This isn’t just a tour; it’s a profound, on-the-ground exploration that deconstructs the intersection of urban planning, sensory engineering, and world-building at an unprecedented scale.

Led by Brian Collins, a former Walt Disney Imagineer and author of the new book Creative Cross-Pollination: A Former Imagineer’s Take on the Innovation Process, this event will decode how elite creative teams turn abstract concepts into tangible, living environments.
For those of us in the Ensō community, Walt’s original vision for EPCOT—the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow—serves as the ultimate case study in intentional design. Long before it became a theme park, EPCOT was conceived as a living, breathing city and a continuous laboratory for urban innovation. Walt wasn’t just designing attractions; he was applying rigorous design thinking to solve complex challenges in transportation, urban planning, and human interaction. We love studying this for the Basecamp Built Environment because it perfectly illustrates how physical spaces and infrastructure can be deliberately engineered to foster connection, inspire continuous learning, and drive profound community impact.

Whether you are looking to revitalize a physical space, foster a more deeply connected community of practice, or simply understand the hidden mechanics of world-class innovation, this masterclass offers an unparalleled look at how narrative architecture shapes the human experience.

Masterclass Itinerary: A Deep Dive into Disney Storytelling and World Building
Friday, May 22nd: The Narrative of the Springs
Location: Disney Springs | Start Time: 6:00 PM
Our journey begins at Disney Springs, a premier example of how a built environment can breathe life into a fictional history.

- Architectural Storytelling: Following a group dinner, Brian will lead a “100-year history” tour of the Springs.
- Fictional Foundations: Discover how specific design features and historical layers are utilized to make a commercial space feel like a historic destination.
- Storytelling Master Class: Learn how Imagineers crafted a narrative arc for the area—from its origins as an 1800s cattle ranch to a thriving bottling company and town—using deliberate architectural cues and hidden “Easter eggs.”
Saturday, May 23rd: Infrastructure as Story
Location: Magic Kingdom & EPCOT | Full Day
On Saturday, we shift our focus to the physical manifestation of Walt Disney’s grandest visions, examining the infrastructure that supports the magic within The Imagineered World.

- 9:00 AM – Pixie Dusting the Magic Kingdom: Explore the original park through an Imagineer’s eyes, deconstructing how the built environment engages sight, sound, smell, and touch to anchor guests in the story. We will also explore the role of utilidors and various transport systems, such as the Monorail, in maintaining thematic consistency and operational efficiency.
- 12:30 PM – Lunch on Own and Transit to EPCOT3:00 PM – World Showcase Secrets at EPCOT: We pivot to EPCOT to analyze how design and engineering serve the overarching narrative. We will examine the Architecture of Futurism and see how structural choices at EPCOT immerse guests in specific times and places.
- 6:00 PM – Dinner on Own and Free Time to Explore
- 9:00 PM – Luminous: The Symphony of Us: Reconnect to feast your eyes on the breathtaking nighttime spectacular as it lights up the sky over World Showcase Lagoon.
Sunday, May 24th: The City of Tomorrow
Location: UCF Rosen College | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
We conclude our masterclass at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College with an academic deep dive into Walt Disney’s ultimate Built Environment concept.

- Walt’s Living Laboratory: Experience an in-depth presentation on the original vision for EPCOT as a functional “City of Tomorrow.”
- Urban Innovation: Using rare film clips and diagrams, you will be treated to a comprehensive breakdown of Walt’s visionary plans for social engineering, high-speed transit, and a climate-controlled city center.
- The Innovator’s Roundtable: Engage with a panel of industry experts during a robust discussion and book signing moderated by Brian Collins, showcasing his new book, Creative Cross-Pollination.
Spaces for this deep dive into the mechanics of wonder are strictly limited. We encourage you to secure your registration as soon as possible to ensure your participation in this transformational weekend.
