A Symposium on Nature, Legacy, and the Future
You are invited to join the Ensō Education Institute on July 13 – 17, 2026, for a unique blend of camping and conversation beneath the towering giants of Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States (the Semiquincentennial), we are convening a dedicated cohort of educators, thinkers, and nature enthusiasts. Our goal is to step away from the noise of modern life, trading the traditional conference hall for the forest canopy to reflect deeply on our nation’s physical foundation: the environment.
Dates: July 13 – 17, 2026 (Arrive Monday Afternoon – Depart Friday Morning)
Location: Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Northern California

THE EXPERIENCE
This is a participatory retreat designed to reconnect with the deep time of the forest. Our days will follow a natural rhythm of active exploration and focused dialogue on topics such as our historical foundations from the legacy of figures like John Muir to Indigenous land management and the dawn of conservation, focus on present realities including climate resilience, network theory in forests, biodiversity, and planetary metabolism, and look ahead to explore non-dystopian futures, regenerative economies, and define a utopian vision for the next 250 years of the American environment.

A COLLABORATIVE CURRICULUM
We invite attendees to lead interactive sessions during the week. Embracing the analog constraints of the woods (no projectors or slides), your session might be a Socratic seminar on water rights, a deep dive into a seminal environmental book, an exploration of nature through music, or a profile of a pivotal historical figure.

LOGISTICS & COMFORT
We will be drive-up tent camping with direct access to hiking trails and facilities. Participants are responsible for their own sleeping gear, tents, personal mess kits, and meals.

JOIN US
Challenge your thinking in the company of peers and breathe air filtered by trees that were saplings long before the Declaration of Independence was signed. Come help us imagine the next 250 years of the American landscape.
